what is a live-in?
A fire department live-in is an individual that receives room & board from a fire department in exchange for staffing the apparatus and managing in-station responsibilities. The concept goes much deeper than that though, and the benefits to both the fire fighter and the fire department are immeasurable.
The terms used for this concept may be different from one department to the next across the country. The most common terminology that we use is to call this a “live-in program”, and a “bunkroom”. The bunkroom is the physical term used to describe the area in which the live-ins sleep, but can be used figuratively to describe all the live-in members as a group.
Most live-in programs cater to young men and women who are seeking post-secondary education. The student is able to complete his or her education while gaining valuable knowledge and experience in the fire service. The student live-in must be dependable, responsible, disciplined, dedicated and self-motivated among other traits.
In Bunkroom Articles we will discuss the organization of a successful live-in program and further demonstrate how by its very nature, being part of a live-in program will give you the ability to learn important life skills at a young age due to the amount of responsibility that a young live-in holds. An individual will get out as much as they put into their experience as a live-in. The leadership and management skills that one can acquire from being part of a bunkroom will be invaluable at such a young age, and one would be hard-pressed to find another way to get that experience and skills elsewhere in the fire service.
So what does the fire department get out of a live-in? First, and probably the most obvious is staffing. Depending on the department, that staffing can be anything from a few extra back step firefighters, to another driver and/or officer. Furthermore, the service to the community will be greatly improved by a live-in program and the advantages of that are unlimited.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to talking about live-in programs; there are so many subtopics that deserve our attention. Stay tuned for articles from the experts in the live-in field. We will have articles for students, the departments, and throw in cool training and team building drills that will hopefully be new to you and your department.
